OB Emergencies — Normal Delivery — Utah 2025 Protocol
Field delivery — recognize imminent birth and manage delivery and immediate newborn care.
Steps by Cert Level
EMT: Prepare OB kit. Position mother supine or left lateral decubitus. Crowning = delivery is imminent — do not delay for transport. Support perineum, guide head gently. Check for nuchal cord — loop over head. Deliver anterior shoulder then posterior. Clamp cord x2 at 8–10in and 6–8in. Cut between clamps. Dry and stimulate newborn.
AEMT: IV access in mother. Monitor for PPH (>500mL blood loss). Fundal massage if uterus boggy post-delivery.
PARAMEDIC: Oxytocin 10 units IM after delivery if PPH. Newborn resuscitation per NRP if APGAR < 7 at 1 min.
